home is 14 years old and the chimney has not been used for about 3 years.

There is moisture from the flue gas condensing in the chimney and with time has worked its way out through to the surface where it evapourates leaving behind a white residue. If the chimney is not in use there is no problem. Unless the chimney is blocked off from the house side, warm air will continue to escape and condensation will continue as will the white spots.

well could be a few differnt reasons one is if you have your furnace and or hot water tank running thur a flue in that chimney if its a older house then the gasses turn to moister and breach thru the bricks the spot are lime comming out of the morter or another may be your crown thats the flat part on top and waters getting in

i would imagine its some kind of alae that live on the soot in the chimney. thats a guess not having seen the white spots
