Personally I think U2 are the greatest band in the world. I think they've worked very hard through adversity to make them what they are. AND, ultimately.......have they ever written a bad song ( pardon the pun )
What, however REALLY BUGS me is the people who are forever putting them down ( especially Bono ). Bono is not egotistical...he's opinionated...and that's his right!
All he does is try to express his feelings and as an artist he does it (mainly) through his music. Due to his hard earned status he is able to communicate this through the most powerful media and the most powerful people....what is wrong with that ???
At least he has the heart and strength to try and make a difference, also, of recent years he has the money to make a difference. Fair play to him.
Bono should be respected not resented. I wish people would give him a break...and just for once say " well done "
PS. When, where and how did they ever condone the IRA ??

There are several criteria for biggest band in the world:
@Most albums sold
@Most singles sold
@Most people in attendance at concerts
@Most money made
@ etc etc.
I should imagine U2 are #1-5 in most of those every year. Does anyone know which of these U2 are #1 at?

Your statement is that U2 are the biggest band in the world.
But you can not say that any band is better than another because music is an ART FORM, it is not like supporting a footlball team you know.
I will concede the point that the edge is a very talented rythmn guitarist. Probably the best ever. But on the other hand, Clayton is one of the most brutal, talentless imbeciles ever to strap on a bass guitar. All he does is thrash the instrument. It's an embarrassment.
Bono is egotistical. He obviously thinks he is a world statesman, to dudge by some of his pronouncements.
Lastly lets not EVER forget that they condoned IRA terrorism ( before 9/11 made it unfashionable of course)

I think they deserve it too. Just love their songs. I think they are so successful because they are never satisfied with mediocrity - if it's worth doing it's got to be the best they can do. They're so focussed and committed. The band gel well together, and they've got the recipe" just right.

For the length of time they've been recording & charting,for the amount of sales,for the concert attendences,merchandise etc... all adds up to far more than any other band.

no, they're really overrated.
a guy dies and goes to heaven, when he gets in there he's checking out all the famous people. 'hey there's elvis, and look, there's jimi and kurt' etc. etc.
he spots someone in a little hat and funny sunglasses and says to a passing angel 'that looks like bono, i didn't know he'd died'.
the angel says 'oh no no, that's not bono, that's god, he just likes to pretend to be bono'.
funny no?
