Im over 40 (by more than a few years!) and am curious if many young people know and appreciate their "rock and roll heritage" I have a collection of over 15000 songs from that era. However, there are a lot of songs from the 80's forward I also. But, in general, I find the music from the 70's on back much more enjoyable and satisfying to listen to than most of the music today.
Having said that, I stillI believe good music is timeless and we shouldn't decide whether we like a particular song based on how old or new it is.

Also, how do you think today's mainstream music compares to that of a generation or two ago?

I'm 25 and I enjoy a lot of the music from the 60's & 70's that my parents listened to when I was a kid.
Some of my favorites include:
Queen
Led Zeppelin
Eric Clapton
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Fleetwood Mac
Moody Blues
David Bowie
The Beatles
Roy Orbison
Stevie Ray Vaughn
When I was in high school I prefered alternative rock...I still like the groups that were popular back then, but I've since stopped listening to radio stations that play the newest, most popular music. I can't stand it. When I listen to the radio, I keep it tuned to a station that plays a nice variety of music from the 60's, 70's, 80's, and whatever else they want.

From the 50's? I certainly won't be able to think of of something from that era that i like to hearken to. From the 60's? Hmmm, there are some exciting early stuff from such band as crimson Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep crimson, yet no longer lots. i will tolerate Rolling Stones, yet Beatles makes me gag. Sorry, yet they are only way too hyped up and overplayed. From the 70's, there is definitely lots greater to be cherished, because it extremely is the time while the two Heavy metallic and innovative Rock began. different than the bands i discussed, such bands as Black Sabbath, Genesis, sure and Queen additionally stand out in my memory. BTW, i'm 36

Hello, I am 22 and much prefer the osund of oldies. Of course, The Beatles are my favorite group thanks to my brother whom I shared a room with growing up. I also have memories blasting bands like The Who and The Stones. But also my parents had a big influence on me. My Mom's favorite had been Billy Joel and Carole King and James Taylor, so she got me into those artists. My dad's a country man...so I don't get much help there. But he is a Dj and has many oldies cd's (Chicago, Three Dog Night, CCR, and many others). I really can't stand today's music...there are a few exceptions. But i ussualy listen to oldies. It just has more to offer. And what's great is that after this music has existed for all these years, it's still Rock 'N' Roll to me. Hope this answers your question.

i'm ALMOST 21 and i totally love the 80s music genre!! I do love Elvis and Johnny Cash (before Walk the Line came out). Todays mainstream music is all image and money. Thats why i try to stick with unknown bands like La Rocca and Citizen Cope. But i would be a liar if i didnt say that i do have some Pussycat Dolls songs' on my ipod!

I'm 19 and love listening to the local oldies station. I love The Temptations, I saw them in concert two years ago, it was cool! Of course there was only one original...but hey, it was still neat. My dad is 40 something, too and he listens to the "classic rock" stations and so I know all the goodies, too. BTO, Styx, Supertramp, Billy Joel, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Manfred Mann (haha), KISS!. I've been singing 'em since I was born! I love love love 'em! I listen to today's music too, and I just don't think it can compare. I mean, all the hip hop stuff is fun to listen to and all but it's hard for me to say it's music... it's just computers. The artists from "back in the day" wrote all their own stuff, they were real artists.
