A young girl was locked up at the top of a castle. In her room was some hay and a spin wheel. She was given the impossible task of turning that hay into gold. Despite and not knowing what to do she started crying. She was told that if she could spin the hay into gold she would be able to marry the prince. After crying for several hours a monster comes to her, and tells her, I will turn this hay into gold for you, if you give me your first child. Looking at her despite situation she agrees, and the hay is turned into gold.

The prince sees this and marries her. Several years later, she gives birth to her first child, in the middle of the night, the monster comes back for the child. She has since then almost forgotten about him, but now remembers, he gives her a chance and says, if you can guess my name you can keep your child.

It depends on which version you have heard. The most famous is of course rumplestiltskin...but there are others. In Scottish Fairy tales it is Whoopie Stoorie. So if it wasn't Mr Stiltskin, then it could have been any number of other similar fables from around the globe.
