I've been thinking.. how can piracy of music and private video game servers (lineage II for example) cost these businesses money? For example let's say someone downloads a song that they enjoy but whether that song was online for them to download or not they would not have bought the CD. How can such a situation be considered a loss? Also do you feel that the government is over stepping its boundaries in helping these multi-billion dollar corporations using tax dollars to go after United States citizens? Wouldn't these tax dollars be better spent on education and improving everyone's way of life instead of babying these corporations? The internet used to be a fun place to explore but now I'm afraid that every action I take will have the FBI breaking down my door. It's ridiculous.

In my mind there's a huge difference between what is "wrong" and what is "illegal".

I'm with you kid. Back in my day (I'm 54), we shared records and recorded them onto tapes, and we did it for the same reason kids download music today. We couldn't afford all the records we wanted, so we passed 'em around. Of course, it wasn't illegal back then. You were allowed to record stuff for your own use, you just couldn't sell it. Bootleg recordings have always been illegal. Today however, big business wants to go after "personal use" as well, and they've gotten the government to do their dirty work for them. Like you said, it's all B.S. because you wouldn't be buying the legitimate copies anyway, so they're not out a cent!

Industry vastly inflates its claims of loss based on inference and deduction of how many illegal copies of something there might be. From those numbers, they propose that everyone of those is a copy someone would have bought. Then they put that out as a fact. This is patently absurd.

I agree with you that there are many people who would never pay even $0.10 for something, but would take it if they thought it was free. A lot will take that item even if they know it's illegal, and would pay for it if they had to.

The fact remains that it's a crime to take something for which you did not pay or that you got from someone who didn't own it.

Specific to the subject, if you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about.

In your case at least someone should have spent a little more money on education. Why is it so hard to understand that if everyone were to just download musik and videos free, those multi billion companies would very soon be broke.
