Both American playwrights, they expose the plight of minorities. Hansberry with "A Raisin in the Sun", shedding light on a family's attempt to buy a home in a White neighborhood, And West with "Before it Hits Home" revealing the story of a Black families struggle with AIDS.
Both resonate with the struggle of life as an African American.

I love the quote from West:
"You can't rely on other people to tell you who you are [as an artist]. If you listen to them, you'll have to believe the good and the bad. The only thing you can really rely on is what I call the midnight owl, that voice you hear when you're just alone, working. That's what will tell you when you've done good work." -- from Essence, May 1994

I hope that helped some.
