If you are worried, simply turn your WLAN switch to the off position on your computer or simply disconnect when you're not using it.

Wep Keys are the most basic form of security for wireless connectivity. Naturally like any basic form of security...it can be breached.

There is, as I understand it, free or cheap software on the internet that you can download or purchase that can hack your key.

Firstly, why would be people go to this length? Well simply because going through wireless connection they save money, so in the long run it could be worth it. On top of this you have curiosity...if something is there to be hacked..then people get kicks out of doing that as well.

Did you also know that if someone connects to your connection it is easily possible for them to view everything your viewing on your PC at that time...and potentially that means looking and finding out what holiday booking you just made,,how much it cost and when your out of the country..potentially leaving your home vulnerable..however..that level of hacking is rare.

The best thing you can do is purchase or download extra security specifically for your connection.

When I purchased a 'Netgear' wireless router it came with an added free trial security programme called 'Trend Micro'. This may be a usefulll starting point for you. Try this link at www.trendmicro-europe.com see if this helps.

As always the more you spend on security the better security you will have. In theory. Shop around. Maybe even try and see if there are any freeware programmes to download from www.download.com

Hope this helps

If they can get on through WEP that is really strange; it takes quite a bit of knowelge to break WEP, however if you kill the WEP and enable WPA they won't be able to hack in.............BE SURE TO NOT LEAVE YOUR WPA KEY# where people can find it and don't give it out to anybody! If you want a visitor to use your wi-fi you key in the number not them.

The fact that your smc modem is always blinking is not necessarily a sign that someone is using your internet. Check your software, the one that came with the modem and check if there's someone else in your network. Just in case make sure none of your folders are shared.

No one is using your connection. That activity light will always blink because there is always data flowing between you and your ISP even when you are not online.

They may be trying to use your network but not getting on. Go to your routers admin web page and see if it is giving out any dhcp addresses.
