Here is an article arguing that a regional war probably won't happen, and things are about as bad as they are going to get.

The thing is, america has tried its hardest to plunge Iraq into civil war, and there's been so much violence, but because the people there follow different factions rather than the government they've been able to survive (relatively). They don't depend on a universal government, they depend on their neighbourhood. All they need is reconstruction but the government is corrupt and doesn't care

First off, America can't be defeated. We are not fighting any national army. What America is doing is trying to organize a government that could rule Iraq. There is no actual war being fought. What would constitute winning ? What would constitute loosing ?
As for articles claiming this or that , they're a dime a dozen. Just because something is in print doesn't mean it should be believed. One guess is as good as another as to what will happen when America pulls out, and leaves Iraq to the Iraqis.
The Iraqi government wants America to stay. We want to leave. What will happen ? I believe that open war will break out between the Sunnis and Shiites which will drag in many or most of the Near-East.
If they can't learn to live and let live, they will deserve whatever comes their way. I wish them the best of luck, but I don't see much hope. Allahu Akbar.

It is a war that we can never win. We can stay there for fifty years, but it won't change the feelings the people of Iraq have for us and each other. It is a nation on the brink of disaster. I firmly believe the country is engaged in a civil war, and the United States is the catalyst of this fact. We are merely bystanders to what is going on there. We can pour billions of more dollars into their crumbling infrastructure and government, we can sacrifice more lives for nothing, or we can accept our part in what we have created, accept facts, and head back home. In the final analysis, the Iraqis must work to secure and stabilize their own homeland.

America has already been defeated. The War on Terror is the same as the War on Drugs. It's expensive, never-ending, and there are no good winners in the end, except in this case, all of the new terrorist groups that have been created. The only winners in the War on Drugs are the drug lords and crooked cops profiting from a huge black market.

It depends on one's view of "worse off." If Iran takes over Iraq, yes, Iraq will be worse off, imo.

History has proven time and time again that these situations, once the dominant country (the US in this case) pulls out, result in genocide. Why talk in terms of IFs? If America is defeated? Hell, we would have already won it if people actually believed in this country and quit embarrassing ourselves overseas through the liberal media. America has lost its balls to fight, and we need them back. This once great country defeated Hitler's armies and now we are struggling with these rag tag terrorists? Its because the media has demonized this war from the start and vilified Bush, undermining the whole war effort.

Bush is a scumbag that doesn't know when to stop. We already met all our goals. We ousted Saddam, we established a democracy, we set them up with their own military...why are we still there?
