WiFi router: 54Mbps or 108Mbps?

I've had wireless internet for a few years now and get about a 5MB speed using my 54Mbps router (I get about the same speed if I plug in the computer to the router using an ethernet cord). I was just wondering, would it do me any good to have a 108Mbps router? Or would I still get my 5MB broadband speed that I'm getting now?

It may seem faster because router-->pc will be faster, but the uplink is still the throttle, and 5Mb is the best you will get.

The speed of the wireless connection will have no effect on the internet speed.

Imagine it as if there are two connections to the router, one from the router to the internet (5mb) and another from your router to your PC (54mb). If you upgrade to a faster wireless it will still be 5mb on the internet connection. The internet speed is restricted by the length of your phone line and unfortunately there is little you can do to increase it. The only advice would be to plug the router in to the main point of the phone line as sometimes the extension may cause a problem. If you do this it would ake a few days to notice any change.

The only reason to upgrade to a faster wireless would be if you transfer files from one PC to another via the wireless network.

no it would make no difference. The download speed is all to do with your line ect. Your router makes very little difference at all. besides 5mb/s is very fast nowhere uploads this fast so you cant download this fast

just for the record your 54mbps is your connection to your router and if you were to send a file to another p.c. on ur network ud get this speed.

Your internet won't get quicker but for sharing files from computer to computer if you have another computer it be a lot quicker....they are having hd dvd and blue ray dvd players support lan out to hook up to routers to get updates for hd content you would need a fast speed to stream video I would go with quicker soon most of your stuff will be able to connect to the internet such as your fridge, oven....ect. so you know when you will need the extra speed also more devices connected the slower speed.......also remember if this is wireless internet the longer distance the less mbps so thats another reason to get a higher speed.........

Your router won't speed up your Internet connection...

I have 2 machines on a 54 and 1 on a 108 and they all get the same connection speed......

The psp is an 802.11b on the spot gadget meaning it would want to in user-friendly words bypass as a lot as 54mbps besides. it would not count number in case you get a speedier router (802.11g) as they are all backwards like minded with 802.11b i exploit the Netgear WGT634U on the spot storage router for my PSP, do no longer purchase it for the force sharing function although because that's sluggish as hell making it unusable yet for PSP on the internet it really works surprising =-) also, once you've homebrew on your PSP get the links2 browser port to the PSP because it a lot pages a lot speedier than the equipped-in internet browser and would obtain a lot speedier too.

Since your Internet connection is the slow link in the chain, getting a faster router won't help. It will only make your internal network faster (i.e. copying files from PC to PC).

more mbps is faster but make sure your processor is fast also or your pc will still bug you and keep you wondering what is going on

faster mbps + faster processor = really satisfied customer
