Irony allows a writer to suggest more than the surface meaning of their words - it shapes meaning in subtle ways and helps create 'layers of meaning'. When using irony a writer creates a kind of 'shared understanding' between the speaker/writer and listener/reader who both recognise that what is said or written is not quite what is meant; it's as if a 'gap' exists between the surface meaning of the words used and the deeper meaning intended.

Why do writers use irony so subtly? Well - they know that readers do not like to be lectured: irony allows meanings to surface unobtrusively, leaving the reader to ponder on what is meant thus increasing the level of engagement with the text. Irony creates a great closeness to a text and a feeling of satisfaction when the irony is recognised and understood.

irony shows an ironic situation that jumps out at the reader. They use it to be funny or point out something that should or should not happen. some follow a way of adding a plot twist of funny ending instead of giving the expected outcome. In this way the ironic twist changes the theme or moral of the story.

Authors use symbolism in illustrating an analogy to something else or to integrate larger broader themes without being obvious. The power of the symbol equates to the power of the message that the author is tryingto convey.

Symbolism, some thing can represent the persons thoughts feeling or actions. Maybe, a tree with falling leaves during autumn can represent a change of time/mood/feeling.

Irony, shock us in to thinking that we don't expect actually could happen. Maybe, challenge our ideas of what society's norms/expectations?
