Oh hell no. Those that vote today are ignorant enough about the issues and usually only vote for one side or the other because either that is the side their parents voted for, that is the side their race votes for, or they believe the lies the politicians tell them and do not have a fundamental understanding of the political philosophy behind 'their' party.

I could only imagine what politics would turn into if every idiot in the US had to vote.

By forcing people to vote - what means are your going to use?

What are you going to use as punishment if they don't?
Their job ? Fine them - so they have a loss of income?
Jail time which could effect their job performance and show on their record?

The system we have isn't great giving people a choice has flaws but in some countries on earth, people are forced to go to the voting polls - and their dictator receives 99%-100% of the votes cast.
Those voters lives don't seem to change for the better but the government can claim everyone voted. Which is a better system? I will have to go with ours - not prefect but better than most.

Despite how passionately I feel that it is every American's DUTY to vote in local, state, and ESPECIALLY national elections, this is an issue I've not yet decided my stance on.

On one hand, compulsary voting would get a much better feel for what our nation truly wants, rather than what the voting 40% or whatever percentage it is wants.

On the other hand...What if you truly are one of the people who choose to express your opinion by not voting, rather than not voting out of laziness.

I'm starting to think we should make it mandatory for every person over the age of 18 to be registered to vote, and to enter the polling booth, though not necessarily record a vote.

Whenever anyone is forced to do something against his will, he doesn't do it any to well. If a person is in a very bad mood because he's forced to vote, he probably would vote foolishly just for spite. His vote would be useless or even harmful. He might vote for the mudhead. If enough would do this, we'll have people in office who don't belong there.

People can not be forced to vote, what do you do if you do not like or even hate the candidates. It is illegal to force one to vote. It is highly encouraged that you get out and vote. Besides if less people vote, perhaps the right person might actually get in the office.

No. Voting should be a personal choice. If people were forced to vote, they would be voting for the wrong reasons. Many people are uninformed or just plain disinterested, so why should they be forced?

Yes.I believe we should all be forced to vote. That way everyones vote is out there and our nominees get a fair election. Many people get into election just because we have so many poeple in this country that just wont get off thier lazy asses and get out there and vote.

not at all. Liberty is not voting as much as voting. If the public started to focus on local/state politics we might have better candidates in the future. While we concentrate on the highest level, we allow low-level incompetent politicians into office.

If you want to put the blame, put it on us for allowing these politicians the chance to rise.
