If a 25 gallon aquarium has a crack with it slowly leak or will the whole aquarium wall crack?

It's not that i have a crack in my aquarium, i haven't even set it up yet. My mom is having second thoughts about it because she thinks it might leak and explode and go trough the floors and cause a mega-renovation. I really want this aquarium so was wondering if something like that could happen?

You said your tank does not have a crack yet? If not then you are most likely in good shape. To prevent concerns first a really good stand is in order. Tanks sitting on a firm, sturdy level surface almost never develop leaks or cracks. Get a good stand and make sure it is level where you put it. Use some small peices of wood or metal (even coins can work) under the stand (not the corner of the tank!) to make sure it's level before you put the tank on it and fill the tank.

Another good thing to do is to test the tank before you set it up. Work out side on a level surface and put the tank on some newspaper anf carefully fill it. Try not to get the paper or the outside of the tank wet. Let it sit several hours or overnight and check to see that the outside and the paper is still dry. If so you have no leaks.

Do these two things and you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Best of luck with the new tank!

If the crack is ending just somewhere and not at an end, it will leak AND the pressure of the water will force the crack to the end of the wall. Normally once the crack is going from end to end, you can re-seal it with aquarium silicone and use it provided that the water stays below the level of the crack. OR you can get a new pane of aquarium grade glass, strip the inside seal and put in the new pane and re-seal it. You could silicone the crack and use it as a terrarium or vivarium.

But since its only a 25 gallon tank, I'd just go to an aquarium store and buy a new all glass aquarium, JUST the tank. Will run you about $25. A glass aquarium will generally run a dollar per gallon up to 75 gallons.

If the crack is split in a fork anywhere, do not put any water back in it.

Good Luck.

..If it doesnt have a crack.. Its not going to get a crack unless you bang it and physically see a crack. The aquarium was not made by some bored eight year old with glass in his backyard and Elmers glue. Its made to hold the pressure and the weight of the water that it contains.

If it already has a crack and you can see it, if you love you fish, do NOT use that aquarium. Chances are, that crack will eventually turn into eighty thousand tiny shards of glass the second you try to fill it up with water. But if it doesnt already have a crack, it will not get one by getting filled up. Reassuringly, if your tank is going to explode, it'll just skip the 'crack' stage and go straight to the shards of death. =P Lol. So tell your mom not to worry about it.

your aquarium should be sturdy enough to go through most things. you would want a sturdier stand if your mom is worried about renovation crews. i kept mine on the floor on a big chunk of foam while they were putting pipes in the street. they have this thing that vibrates the earth to get it to settle so the street is flat. it made my house shake for like a month because it kept raining and washing out what they did the day before. you think they would be smarter, jeez.

It will leak, and slowly the pressure of the water will become too much and the tank will burst.

If it was like that when you first got it home then you should take it back to the store. Talk to the manager or get it replaced...
