I'm going to Orlando next month with a friend, and we're looking for some great non Disney things to do. I've done some research, but really want some answers from locals or people who've been there. Also what kinds of things can we do if it rains?

I guess it's not just non-disney, really we want non-theme park things, maybe beaches, orange orchards, wildlife, shopping etc.

Central Florida has so many things to see and do! Visit one of Florida's beautiful beaches. Cocoa Beach is the closest at a 45 minute drive. It is a great family beach and it even has a large arcade right by the pier.
My favorite beach is Siesta Key, located in Sarasota. It is a longer drive - about an hour and 45 minute drive south of Orlando, but it is well worth it. It is known for its baby-powder soft pure white sand. You'll feel like you're in the bahamas.

Try a dinner show one night! Medieval Times, located off Hwy 192 in Kissimmee is a great location! Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede, located right off I-4 and exit 68 is also a great place to enjoy a meal and see a great show.
Take the kids to Kennedy Space Center - they have something for everyone to see and do. Its amazing.
Another favorite of my family is to take an airboat ride and see the real Florida. I recommend Boggy Creek Airboat Rides, located in Poincicana, just outside Kissimmee. It is the best way to enjoy Florida's natural landscape and see animals in the wild, including gators! They also offer Safari tours.
If you are over 21, head to downtown Orlando to one of the city's famous nightclubs, The Roxy. Celebs dance the night away here so you might see a familiar face!

It's called "Pleasure Island" and you must be 21 to enjoy the bars, but there is a Comedy Warehouse that you can go to if you are younger which is improv (think "Whose Line is it, anyway") Downtown Disney is where it's located along with several other shops and restaurants. Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock Cafe as well. Cirque du Soliel show is amazing and well worth the pricey admission. We're going in a couple of weeks, ourselves. Skip Orlando alltogether. I suggest St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Southern GA.
