Because people fail to realize the importance of an individual vote thinking that their individual vote is going to play a role in dethroning or forming a new government.
Though some people understand this fact they dont vote for a simple reason , loss of faith in the voting process (fake votes) and the actual government polcies.

I think people don't participate for two different reasons:
1. They don't think the elections are valid. Between voting machine fiascoes, and all of the big money involved in the process, some voters don't think their vote is counted.
2. They don't think the result matters. Some people feel that all politicians are the same, and it will not have an impact upon their lives no matter who wins the election.
I hope I never get so disillusioned.

I think that they are squandering an opportunity to determine what the nation stands for and what direction that they want to take it. A voice in this government is your vote, it is democracy and should be treated as such and not thrown away. In answer to your question many people do not vote for many different reasons, most of them invalid. I have voted in every congressional and presidential election since 1968 and I am proud of it. I think people that don't vote have no right to complain about how the government is working.

Because people are too lazy to vote, or they don't want to vote, for whatever reason......Then they feel like they can ***** and moan because the person they liked didn't get elected.
To the person who says the last election was 'bought and paid for', maybe if more of you ******* hippies got off your asses and voted, the last two elections wouldn't've been so damned close, and we wouldn't be stuck with an idiot in the office of President right now....But noooo....So many of you people who hate the way the government is going lately are quite content to complain about it, but just too ******* lazy to actually DO something about it.
Here's a thought....WRITE your government representatives, be it your mayor, governor, state legislature, congressmen, or the President of the United States himself.
START or PARTICIPATE IN grassroots campaigns to enact legislative changes, and support the people you agree with.
And, above all, ******* VOTE! People have DIED for your RIGHT to vote, and so many of you just go throw it away like so much garbage, and then complain when the country goes to ****.
It's people like YOU, haley d, who let this country go to ****. PEOPLE LIKE ******* *YOU*. You're too goddamned lazy to use the abundantly available information, be it the internet, Cspan, or Fox-*******-News, and learn about the issues, the candidates, and their stances on the issues...And then you want to go, "*whine* Waaaahhh! Why is the country so crappy!!".
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. QUIT BEING PART OF THE ******* PROBLEM, AND GET OFF YOUR LAZY *** AND LEARN AND VOTE!
Jesus ******* Christ you people piss me off.

Being a young voter i can say that most of my friends didnt vote because they dont feel that anyone had a connection with them. I tend to feel the same way. That these canidates are old fussies who dont care about 18- 29 yr. olds. I mean what 18 year old is going to sit and watch C-SPAN to figure out who to vote for?

Because the US voting system is not a true fair democratic system. We are only given 2 choices "Republican" or "Democrat" and they are basically the same thing with very small differences. Everyone knows the only true voting done in America is done with money.

They equally dislike both candidates. They are lazy. They like both candidates equally. They forget it is voting day! Or, it could be a combination of all of those things.
