Let's put it this way...

If your tranny is old, flushing it can make it fail completely it, as it's those particle buildups that kept it working. Flushing it will actually plug up the various valves and such.

If your tranny is relatively new and clean (and regularly flushed), then flushing is good.

However, don't do the Jiffy Lube flush. They've been known to charge and not do a single thing, and those machines only promise 90% fluid exchange any way.

The mechanic you spoke with was both right and wrong. Yes, flushing the automatic tranny DOES move the bi-metal particles around(here the guy was right), and then they get moved out because of the flushing(this is where he went wrong because he didn't tell you the whole story). This helps the tranny clutch plates to press together better and the planetary gear(s) have less crap to wear them down and slow them down.

transmissions are designed to have the fluid changed ever so often.. see what the manual for the car recommends.. when changing fluid. the pan is removed and the pan has a magnet on it and the metal shavings are stuck to the magnet in the pan.. as long as the pan is wiped clean. the shavings are gone.. dont see how it can affect the metal particles

No, it doesn't make sense. Just have the oil drained and replaced with the correct type for your car.
