(I am not an atheist.) Scientifically speaking, it is almost impossible to prove a negative. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to prove there is no God. Consequently, anyone that argues that God doesn't exist cannot support their position on a rational/scientific basis. Therefore, atheism is a BELIEF in the same way that theism (the existence of God) is a belief.

Einstein noted that evil is the absence of God. He noted that this is similar to the concept that dark is the absence of light and cold is the absence of heat. Since there is a great deal of good in the world (good may be considered the opposite of evil) this might 'prove' that God exists. Technically, it doesn't prove God exists, but it is completely consistent with the existence of God. And, evil does not prove that God does not exist, but rather that God is absent in the individual(s) committing the evil.

Best wishes.

Everyone else pretty much covered what I was going to say. However, in addition, I think whether you believe in a god or not, that's a belief, faith. You can't prove or disprove something so ethereal, intangible.

Faith comes from inside of the individual. Whatever it is that you may believe, or not believe, is part of you as a human being. Just because we may not agree doesn't mean that our beliefs are wrong.

You can't "defeat" an idealogy. One person can't make another (intelligent, fully sane) person believe something they don't feel already. I'm not a Christian, but I do believe in a "higher power." A life force, if you will. But, my belief is that I see this life force every day, all day. It runs through me and all the people around me and nature and birds and cats and the sky. I can no easier prove that to someone who doesn't believe it than a Christian can prove to me that (the Christian) god does exist.

Excellent question. Although I am an atheist, I cannot disprove god entirely, but I look at it like this:

If I told you that there was a teapot floating around in space, between Mars and Jupiter, but I said that it was too small to see with a telescope, or any of the other numerous methods of "seeing" in space, could you prove it wasn't there?

Even though you know there isn't a teapot in space, if someone demanded that you prove it wasn't there, it would be impossible.

What I am saying is that disproving God isn't possible. But can a Christian prove absolutely that there is a god? Or a muslim, or a Mormon, or any other religion?

Being an atheist isn't about hate, in fact, I am a very tolerant person, but I just don't believe a superhero in the sky created us.

You can't disprove a negative. Let me show you an example:

If you believe that there is a God, how can you prove this isn't a universe devoid of God?

That's how an intelligent person, atheist or not, answers that question.

The problem with this question is in the first scentance. You say: "If YOU don't BELIEVE that there is a god." However you highlighted the wrong word I would right that scentance as "If you DON'T belive that there is a god." The point i'm trying to make here is that the existence of God is seen as a matter of belife. There is nothing for me as an athiest to prove because I am not trying to put forward a belife, in contrast you are trying to put forward the postion that there is a god and therefore have something to prove.

If you are to insist that for everything I don't belive in I have to provide evidence for its nonexistence then I would have to disprove an infinte number of things including invisible pink unicorns, Santa Claus and itangible, invisible, flying dragons. For that matter if I had to belive in everything I could not disprove I would also need to belive in Zeus, Odin and Quetzovercotl

Contary to the commonly accepted saying it is possible to disprove some negatives so you could argue that I should still try to disprove God or show that there is more evidence against God's existence than there is for. However you then have to ask as to what would count as evidence against God's existence? For example does evil count as evidence against God's existence? or scientific explanations of orgins of the universe and life that do not need a god? Is there any observation or discovery that if found would disprove God? I suspect not, as it could always be claimed that God wants our faith, wants us to trust him unconditionally, and if we have proof of his existence then we would not have faith as we would know he existed.

However I feel I should mention that I regard the Abrahamic God as is (suposedly) revealed in the bible to be extreamly unlikely. We are told that is an all loving God, however there are several massarcres in the old testament that are aproved by God, and revelations features the torture and massarce of many who are guilty of nothing more than lacking belief in Jesus.

As an agnostic, I see no difference between a belief in god and a belief that there is no god - both are based on an article of faith, not proof. Neither belief can be based on proof, since at this time there is no way to prove or disprove the existence of god.

You're too hung up on proof. If your faith is secure in the absence of proof either way, that's all you need. The same goes for an atheist. If his/her faith that there is no god is secure, proof is not needed.

Now if it ever becomes possible to prove or disprove the existence of god, that will be another story. But I doubt that this will happen. That is my faith.

As you might suspect after reading this, no one knows what they're talking about with regard to the existence of god, the non-existence of god, or our lack of ability to prove the truth one way or the other. We simply believe.

I don't have to prove anything really, I probably could not yet, there are still the little gaps that religious people always stick thier fingers in, mainly because it is so hard to look into the past. I have my theory as to why religion was invented, and i do believe that it was quite necessary, but in todays society it is becoming more of a burden than an actual help.

The "most intelligent" atheist can answer this kind of question with logical thinking.

You're asking one to prove that something isn't.
The onus of proof lies with the one who makes the claim. Not on the one who does not make the claim. You must prove that god exists. You cannot ask anyone to "prove" that he doesn't exist.

"Proof" presupposes existence. To prove a non-existence requires proving by means of non-proof. That is to prove something doesn't exist by a means of having no proof. Do you understand the illogic of your question? You are essentially saying, "I can't prove god exists, therefore I believe he exists."

It is impossible to prove a negative. Can you show me a negative something?

As an Atheist, I cannot prove the non-existence of God; it is impossible to do so. Teh only thing that I can use to try and prove his non- existence, is the lack of evidence for his existence: there is none. There is absolutely no tangible evidence for the existence of God; there are those who will say the Bible, but that cannot be held as evidence. The Bible is a book, and here is my answer to books: books lie. And now I have e question for you. You have asked me how I can prove the non- existence of God, for you, the question is, how can you prove his existence?

This is an easy question to answer, and one that many Creationists always ask, the answer is that a negative can never be proven, no matter what topic you're talking about. It is the essence of science to prove the existence of something, nobody can prove the non-existence of something....a logical impossibility.
