I think there needs to be a distinction made between the professional blogger and the keyboard jockey.
Professional bloggers do research, verify facts, earn their living, and do everything a working journalist does, it is just that the end product is on a blog. They should have the same credibility as any journalist in print or on television, because they have earned it.
Keyboard jockies are something else entirely, they are just random people spewing random thoughts on the internet. They should not receive the same credibility or journalistic protections.

I'm a blogger, and I don't insist on having the same credibility as journalists.
Why would I want my credibility lowered to that level?

Anyone who reports verifiable facts, regardless of the medium, regardless of the size of readership, and regardless of the advertising revenue, is a journalist.
Whether it's the NY Times, a free broadsheet full of ads, or a website name Bloggerama, the only standard to judge "What is jounalism?" is the veracity of the words.
My dictionary defines journalism as, "The profession of reporting or photographing or editing news stories for one of the media".
The internet IS a media, so if a blogger finds and reports the truth, he is a journalist. QED.

because we tell the truth, not like some mayor network herding a dozen demonstrators into a small corner, and than selling it as a riot.
