Although the air bubble in the bottle can make a difference, if it is removed and the bottle recapped, a bottle of diet soda is about the density of water and the plastic floats. The bottle of sugar soda is heavier because of the increased density of the dissolved sugar. The class exercise in the source reflects the thinking.

in the bottle or out of the bottle?
in the bottle both float due to water displacement but out of the bottle they both sink because they are heavier than water even though they are both made of water
regular or diet it doesn't matter the extra sugar from the regular will dissolve and it won't affect the out come
