i have a Dell XPS dimension E510 Desktop. As most computers after the first years use it starts getting a little bit slower. Will it really benefit me to spend $100 on a 1GB memory chip, or should i just keep it the same?

I have 4 dims (4 memory slots) with two 256 megabyte cards in it. They don't make a 256 card with the minimum card speed i need. My dad is helping me by searching ebay but i don't know if it will improve performance that much.

Yes is the short answer.
*Quick Edit having read the other answers*
ABSOLUTLY IT WILL GREATLY IMPROVE YOUR PERFORMANCE*
I have a computer company for home computers and small / med size business so I really do know.

Go to http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ and run it to see what results you get.
The price should also be cheap to buy it from there.
If you give the results on here, I can advise you as to what to purchase.
From what you have already said, I presume that at the moment you have 4 slots, two of which are being used for 256 sticks, totalling your 512.
This means that either a single 512 or two 256 are what you could purchase.
The only other choice, is to buy 2x512 sticks.
It's hard to say without your exact configuration, so go do that and post the results back here

I'm guessing you bought the cheapest computer on the shelf last year, so I'm not convinced you're going to get much more speed out of it, unless you are gaming, graphics, video creating, stuff like that, in which case, the memory upgrade would be worth it. But don't expect to run Vista as someone suggested. Vista has some additional hardware requirements such as a super duper video card that I don't think you have.
If you are considering upgrading the computer to a newer one any time soon, then don't waste the money on more memory for this one.

Depending on what you use the computer for is what will make that decision.
If your someone who does just word processing, then a gig of RAM really won't help you out that much.
If you play games or do desktop publishing, then I would say that you need a gig of RAM.
Also if you can provide it, what type of processor do you have in your PC?
If you already have 512MB of RAM, then 100 dollars is really steep to upgrade with another 512MB stick.
Hope this helps!

Upgrading to 1 GB will let you be able to run Windows Vista. If you play a lot of games or run a lot of programs then adding another 512 MB would help you greatly. It would also make things start up and run faster.

that depends on your pc speed and if you have a removable graphics card, if you have onbard graphics, the card will use certain parts of the memory, so yes, I would suggest you get a memory upgrade.
My PC has an onboard graphics card and has 256 meg, but the card uses 32 meg of this ram
I hope this helps you

Really depends on what you do with your computer. Do you game? If you do then it would help. For alot of other stuff, I don't think you would gain much from this. Try defragging your HD, and run anti-virus to check for any virus. Clear all temp files from internet and cache too. Good luck.
