Coloured lights for the stage are a little like paints and need mixing to be truly effective. Like paints, complimentary colours make each other stand out.(complimentary - opposite each other in the colour circle., Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain - Red,Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, (Indigo & Violet). If in doubt build a quick shoe box model and use coloured toffee paper wrappers over a number of torch lights. Have fun, learn and enjoy.

Usually blue means something dark and depressed. Yellow is bright and happy... Green can be jelously but can also signify nature. If you want a colour for shock.....go with a blood red. Depending on the scene.....bring it up slow (maybe mix it with a blue) and then let it grow to an intense colour.
You'll have to play around a bit though until you find the "perfect" colour. There are so MANY colours for lights in theatre.
