The team which wins the Stanley Cup, has the names of its players engraved on the side. The Cup will grow too large if they continually add more rings. What will happen when they run out of space for engraving?

They cut off the top main ring, flatten it, and put in the Hall of fame. They accually just did that- Tampa Bay filled up the last ring, so when the canes won it, they had to add the new ring. it accually has the last season on there too, saying season not played or similar. Each ring lasts for 17 years or something like that.

And they're all made of silver...

The cup does not grow larger anymore, they figured if it did it would be too much of a pain to hoist.

When they run out of space, which they finally did last season, when the Carolina Hurricanes won the cup, they are taking off the top ring, the very first one to ever be used and putting it into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Then they are adding a new ring at the bottom. First time they've ever done it.

They take a ring off and put a blank one on. They just took a ring off. The last team on it was either Tampa when they won in 2004 or it's full now that Carolina was put on there for 2006. I don't remember which. If you go to the Hockey Hall of Fame they have all the bands taken off there so you can see all the names.

When they need to, they take a ring off of the Cup and add it to a special exhibit in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Two rings of the Cup are already there.

A team can expect to have their name on the trophy for 61 years before their ring is replaced to make room for a new one.
