The equals sign means that everything on one side is the same number as everything on the other side.

Therefore, you can do anything you want to the stuff on one side of the equals, as long as you do that exact thing to the other side as well.

5=5, therefore, 5+1 = 5+1 (add 1 to both sides -- it's still true), therefore 6=6 -- see? It works.

The idea is to "isolate" the unknown, make all the other stuff go away so you end up with [unknown, all by itself equals something, that something being the answer or solution].

So, to get the z alone, you take the square root of each side of the equals sign. The square root of z-squared is z. The square root of 4 is 2 (could be negative 2 or positive 2).

For 3, first take the square root of both sides, leaving n-4 on the left.

Then add 4 to both sides, leaving n on the left, and the value of n on the right.

It would have been better if you tried the problems and checked the answers here. Here are a few solutions:

1) z^2 = 4, z = + or - 2
2) x^2 = 49/36 , x = 7/6 again + or -
3) (n-4)^2 = 25, n-4 = + or - 5, n = 1 or -9
4) (t+2)^2 = 1, t+2 = +1 or -1, t = -1 or -3

So, try the others on your own. There is no substitute for paper and pencil and work.
