The Hindenburg was a spectacle of zeppelin design, described as a floating palace, nearly as large and as grand as the Titanic, and as doomed. It could hold 50 passengers and had 30 crewmen.. It was made in Germany. It was 804 feet in length. It was pretty much a blimp.
On May 6, 1937 it exploded over New Jersey when it was about to land. A theory states that a spark caused by static electricity ignited hydrogen seeping from a ruptured gas bag. Another theory is that the static electricity cause the highly flammable outer covering to cathc on fire instead of seeping hydrogen.

The Hindenburg was a Hydrogen filled Zeppelin (Blimp) flying from Germany to the US carrying passengers across the Atlantic. pretty much what happened was when it was landing something caused the Hydrogen in the Zeppelin to explode.. and there are some theories about how it exploded. one is that static electricity ignited the Hydrogen gas.. another one was a possible terror attack. and i also heard one of someone smoking outside the smoking area on the Zeppelin and that could have sparked it. nobody really knows how it exploded but thats what they think happend

It has been determined recently, that the main reason it burned was, that the lacquer used to make it gas tight, was a composition not unlike today's solid rocket booster fuel.
So a small spark, possibly caused by a discharge of static electricity, may have ignited it.
The fact that they used hydrogen as the lifting gas (since the USA had refused to supply non flammable helium), made this a bomb ready to go at any time.

i believe there is a hindenburg special tonight on the history channel-- but anyway it was an airship that stayed afloat by using hydrogen. It exploded at an airport in New jersey and many people aboard died!!

Germany makes a long balloon. Filled it with Helium. Hey, it floats! Put people in it and push it with props. Swastikas. Pride of the nation. Let's go to New York. Time to land. A spark from something (Cigarette? Darn smokers). Boom. Hey, helium sure burns fast. "Oh the humanity". Better not use helium anymore. Lets make bigger airplanes instead, and we can use them to start a war to boot! End of story.
