With the engine at idle pull the vacuum line off of the fuel pressure regulator port.If gas comes out it is shot. The engine jerking could be spark tracking to ground at the plug wires. Spark plug grease on the inside of the plug cap should solve the problem.

If you suspect a bad fuel pressure regulator, you can hook up a fuel pressure tester to the rail or you can take it to a garage that has the equipment to test it.You should have changed the fuel filter already and made sure everything else is good IE plugs ,wires, air cleaner ect.

It would seem odd that you would equate a fuel pressure reg. to the word periodically, sounds more like a heavy misfire, or your torque converter hunting in and out of overdrive/lockup.
