so last night i was at L&D for an unbearable back ache...it was hurting so bad I could hardly move. I wasnt feeling too many abdominal contractions though that I knew of. Last time I was checked was on Wednesday and I was 3cm, and 50% effaced. When they checked me last night I was still the same...no change since Wednesday. However, after checking me she said I had A LOT of bloody show....and I saw it...there was a lot. I was told to walk around for 30 minutes to see if it would change my cervix at all and when she checked me again in thirty minutes, I was still 3cm, so they sent me home with Vicodin for my back and ambien for sleeping. what does the bloody show mean? From all that I read in pregnancy books, labor usually kicks in within 24-48 hours after the show.....is this not right or has anyone experienced this before?

I'm surprised they sent you home, at 3cm IF you were actively contracting you would have probably been admitted at our hospital, however everyone hospital/physician is different. Surprised you got vicodin and ambien though - not that it will hurt you necessarily, but since you came in last night I bet their rationale was they wanted you to get a good nap or good night's sleep if possible before coming back in today.

The bloody show comes from the cervix dilating, blood vessels are breaking as it stretches open, thus the bloody show, the mucus is from the plug which seals the cervix to protect the baby from infection, thus bloody show can be a pinkish/reddish/brownish yellow-white streaked slimy mass sometime in strings or chunks. Sometimes this can happen 1-2 weeks before labor but sound like things will happen sooner for you. Good luck!

This doesnt indicate that labor is going to start in a matter of hours...It can be up to a few weeks before u will start labor...I lost my mucous plug and had bloody show but didnt have the baby for 2 1/2 weeks later which then was induced labor...i was dialated to 2 centimeters the whole time...just sit back and wait until the baby decides to come..walking can help as can sex and other methods but arent 100% accuarate, some women dialate very quickly during these steps and others dont at all.it really depends on the womans body, the baby and how her body is handling the contractions...Good Luck!!!

From my own experience, my bloody show started around 12:30 on Monday afternoon and by Tuesday morning at 10:02 a.m. my son was here (my 37th week of pregnancy). They did end up augmenting my labor around 5:05 in the morning to help me out, because once you reach 4 cm, they'll help you along because of advanced cervical dilation. I wish you much luck and it sounds as if it won't be long before your baby arrives.

I think it's your cervical mucous plug coming away, so labour is probably not too far away. Don't forget your dates may be inaccurate, so try not panic and good luck!..
