The total number is probably on the order of 10^22 at least.

The KNOWN number is 217 as of now (January 2007). That is eight in our solar system, and 209 in other solar systems.

Probably, more uknowns than we can count... however...
We know what known planets there are (funny how that works out - huh?):

There are nine in our solar system (if we count Pluto as a planet anymore). Eight if we don't (just making the math easy for everyone).

As of January 13, 2007, there are 209 planet candidates outside of the solar system. See the reference below.

There are only 8 known planets because Pluto is no longet a planet! But they are still finding more and more all the time!

We know that there are 8, mabe even 9. Pluto isn't a planet though, they consider it a plantiod because of its size. We're still finding them.

There are many other stars with planets orbiting them, like our sun. We don't know how many stars have other planets orbiting them, and we don't know how many planets orbit the other stars.

Way too many to count. besides, we dont even know how far the universe goes. that is an impossable question to answer

they say about 8 in the milky way.and there may be more because scientists haven't yet searched the whole universe so my answer would be unknown.

Beyond our own solar system??...unknown. but i suspect there's more planets than there are stars out there.
