I have lots of dress shirts, and just noticed that the nicer ones (Canali) are a little different than the regular shirts (Gap). The holes where the buttons go through are all virtical, except for the last one, which is horizontal....has anyone else notice this? Why are the nice shirts made this way?

The lowest button hole is usually tucked into your pants. When you sit down your pants kind of fold horizontally. By having the buttonhole going in this same direction, it is less likely to open up and come unbuttoned. At least that's what a tailor at a fancier men's shop told me. It takes a little extra time and effort to change the direction of this one button hole, so it is often only done on better lines of shirts.

The better shirts are made in speciality shops which are regulated buy the government rules and the other cheaper ones are made in low end factories and the women are probably getting paid by the piece. This means they probably get paid 3 cents for each shirt they sew. And it was probably made in Taiwan or some other third world country.

well you get what you pay for, cheaper shirts need ironed and more pricey ones can be hung up damp after a fluff in the dryer..Each designer had its trade mark in how they put together clothing. up down and so on..
