I have a company car with a service plan where I have the oil & filter changed every 5000 miles. I do predominantly highway driving. I have not seen any oil related problems in three company vehicles.

Personally, my father is an auto mechanic. We began using synthetic oil, Mobil 1, on an engine. This was about 15 years ago. I seem to recall that Mobil 1 advertised back then that you could go 1 year or 25,000 miles between oil changes. We never tested that claim. We did use the Mobil1 and added Slick 50 at one oil change. We used only Mobil 1 for another year after that. My father rebuilt that engine (after running 125K miles) & after about two years on the Mobil 1/ Slick 50 mix. He said the insides looked like they were still new.

To close the novel, using synthetic oil for 10,000 miles should be safe. Changing after 5000 miles for normal grade oil should be fine as well.

The reason you should change more often rather than later is relatively simple: It helps reduce the amount of carbon and particle build-up that does occur in engines during normal use. The oil filter can only remove so much of this garbage before the filter stops being able to trap the particles at all. Plus, depending on what kind of car and how hot the engine runs, regular sooner-than-later oil changes help keep the engine running longer and help to make the engine last longer.

10,000 miles is way too long to go without an oil change. You're running the risk of ruining your engine. For $25, it isn't worth trying to cheap out on an oil change.

10k is fine if you're using synthetic. People have been saying 3,000 miles because that's what their granddaddies said, ignoring the fact that oil lasts four times as long as it did 40 years ago.

You should change the oil as often as the manufacturer recommends. Or, you can have your oil analyzed and they can tell you if it should be changed.
