How about Augustus for A? He was Julius Caesar's nephew who became emperor after Caesar's death and in fact really established the traditions of the emperor. You could talk about him for hours
b - Byzantium - capital of the Eastern Roman empire when it was split in two, survived a thousand years after the fall of Rome
C - Cannae - devastating military loss to Hannibal and the Cathaginians (who were never able to follow up on this win and were destroyed by Romans shortly thereafter
that should get you started, if you really get stuck maybe use Emperor or place names (Diocletian, Etruscan, etc)
