Thanks,

A dislocation of the shoulder involves massive damage to the glenoid labrum (cartilage). This results in chronic instability and often a progressively worsening condition.

A separated shoulder results from a tear or rupture of a ligament that can be repaired surgically if needed. Generally, with proper treatment, this injury does better long-term than a dislocation.

Note: a dislocation of the shoulder and a separation of the shoulder involve different joints of the shoulder girdle.

Best wishes.

Shoulder Separation Vs Dislocation

It depends how much of a separation. If its a grade 3 sep then that would be the worse. This means there was physical breaking of the ligaments and need surgical reconstruction. This will cause the shoulder never to be quite the same.

Don't get me wrong though, continually dislocations and lower grade separations can compound and create arthritic joints or chronic pain.

Dislocated Or Separated Shoulder

The dislocated shoulder can be remedied immediately by having it relocated by a doctor. A separated shoulder weakens the part that tore, so I think the separated shoulder is the one with the most after effects, if any.

I think the opposite, each time you dislocate any joint it becomes easier and easier to dislocate again, while a seperation, on the other hand, can be fixed through surgery and in many cases the joint will come out stronger than they were before the injury.

I was deliberately injured once as a grappler after 5+ years I just now have full range of motion but with remained was severe popping cracks at the most slightest of arm movement & many times got reassessed to a surgical specialist who all said it was best not to have surgery as I was boarder line as best not too, thru 1 single twist of arm the guy made sure that 1s I got my color belt in BJJ he was going to hurt me having near full thickness tear to all 4 muscle, the bursitis and all the attach ligaments as mention thru MRI scan. -deserved this NOT as I ve always tapped while I was a gentle grappler to all others!
