No--according to Karl Marx, who was pretty much the inventor or Communism, Socialism is merely a temporary stepping stone for a society on its way to full-blown Communism. Actually, our current form of government in the U.S.--Democracy, is a mix between communism and capitalism, since the two are at extreme opposite poles of the spectrum and Democracy is in the middle: it allows for free enterprise and individual wealth, but also provides a government safety net for those who need it.

From an American perspective, it is much closer to communism than capitalism. However, it is a mix of the two. If you're poor or scared that you will lose your job soon and don't have enough self-confidence in your own capabilities, then certainly a socialist system is for you. If you are a gambling maniac and enjoy the ups and downs of life, capitalism is a hell of a ride and I personally wouldn't live any other way.

No. Socialism is a reaction to capitalism. Communism is pro-active and instigatory. Socialism needs capitalism as an excuse. Communism does not use excuses.

I'd say thats the easiest and most comprehensible way to describe it. For my money, I love capitalism. Especially when all is going well in the world. Sadly, however, my social conscience tells me that extreme and exclusive capitalism creates unbalance in a country, and unrest is surely to follow. (Put down your guns, Americans...I'm not a communist!) I think, as we see our world spinning out of control, we need to think of our neighbours, and certainly, those less fortunate. (Again, guns down...I'm not talking about the lazy slobs who want hand outs...) A moderate form of socialism would ensure a medical care system for all and a good, free educational system. These are the basics that ALL should enjoy...from there, the gloves are off. Let capitalism reign, and he who dies with the most toys wins!

why do people here assume that capitalism is good while communism is bad?? unbridled capitalism is just as bad as communism, capitalism leads to worker exploitation and monopolization, it gave us the great depression, the trick is to take the best elements of the above systems, the USA has a mix of capitalism with some socialism

No. I would say socialism is a lesser degree of communism. Government control over business and individual is NOT capitalism.

socialism is like communism in certain ways, but the complete nothing like capitalism.
communism (uncountable)
A socialist society in which resources are held collectively, under the slogan "from each according to his or her ability, and to each according to his or her need", and in which the State is either abolished because it is harmful or withers away because it is no longer required. Communism is the final aim of revolutionary socialist ideologies such as Marxism and anarchism.
socialism (uncountable)
Any of various political philosophies that support social and economic equality, collective decision-making, and public control of productive capital and natural resources, as advocated by socialists.
capitalism (uncountable)
(politics) a socio-economic system based on private property rights, including the private ownership of resources or capital, with economic decisions made largely through the operation of a free market rather than by state control.

I think Socialism is more related to communism, because they're both bad, whereas so-called "capitalism" (free enterprise) is the way of free and responsible people.
