hey if u get a RAM of 256MB it will be using only 196MB to the max for the user rest will be hidden usage by the system since it will be maintain the index of the computer and for the fast access of ur computer so dont worry about this since it wont give harm to ur computer it will be working fine and while loading of ur computer u can see 256MB of Ram after booting the OS it wont be 256MB ok

It sounds like your missing 64 MB of memory, the only way I could see this happening is if when you "restored" your computer you set the shared memory on your system to a different interval. Try looking in the system manuel about changing the amount allocated to the shared memory card, it should be farely simple such as pressing a keystroke at startup like tab or f2, scrolling though all your CMOS options and changing the memory that is given to the card.

I agree with johnny wonder. What's happened is that 64MB of RAM has been allocated as video memory. You haven't actually lost any RAM.

you didn't loose it, it has just been allocated to the video memory. go to the bios, and lessen the video shared memory.
