Read Voltaire's short stories in book form, Moby Dick, Catcher in the Rye, Shakespear's A MidSummer's Night's Dream, Snow White and Rose Red, Cindarella, or Google "Classic Literature" and find one of your own. I forgot to mention The Scarlet Letter. David Copperfield, Mark Twain, the author, wrote several classics like Tom Sawyer.

Have you read Asser's 'Alfred The Great'?
'Tis not a long book, but it certainly is a classic, recounting the reign of King Alfred (871-99) in Wessex. He was the king who "succeeded both in warfare and wisdom". The Penguin Classic edition I have also has an introduction, appendices, and notes to introduction and text if you are not familiar with this period of history in England.
