You can try houseofnames.com also ancestry.com If your family has been in the same area for a long time you could try the local historical society and look at newspaper clippings and birth/death records and try to trace it back to the origins.

Try a web search with the keywords "origin" and "last name." You'll get a lot of sites that try to provide what you need. One of them is http://genealogy.about.com/library/surnames/bl_meaning.htm

If none of these help you, try to search for the last name directly. For example, if you search for "smith name origin" in Google, you'll get http://genealogy.about.com/library/surnames/s/bl_name-SMITH.htm as a first hit.
