I think that if it was defending you or your family, it's a hero and shouldn't be put to sleep.

I'd be worried that the dog may not be able to differentiate a thief and say perhaps the mailman. Scaring or biting is one thing, killing a human is another. I don't think the dog should be praised but euthanized, I guess it would depend on the situation.
Our house was vandalized a few months ago. They spray painted EVERYTHING including my poor almost blind cat, who probably showed them were my valuables were hidden. Sick people, I'm just glad they didn't harm him any further.

Dogs are unable to ascertain a thief as a thief and therefore are unable to "punish" them. My place was broken into and my dog did nothing. That's the kind of dog I want- one who loves people because all her experiences with people have taught her that she can trust us. There are laws and punishments attached for what a thief deserves for their actions and the upset they cause- having a dog kill them is not listed therein.
If, however, the thief tried to harm my dog, I'd expect the dog to defend herself, hopefully without killing anyone.

If the dog was defending its family I would praise it, however be carefult that the dog does not then decide to attack anyone who enters its home. Many cultures originally kept dogs as guardians of their home, so it is very much a part of most dogs natures. Personally I would say the theif deserved it, but then that is just me...

That's a hard question...but I wouldn't praise the dog. Even though I have 2 dogs if one of my dogs KILLED someone that would cause serious problems. Be carefull with dogs. If theirs a theif...just call the police!

Well think about it this way.

Your dog is a part of your family. When someone breaks into your house you have the right to defend your family at all cost.

Do we not owe the same right to the four legged part of our family?

Yup it's a hero. But my poor 131 pound dog, would only consider him a potential friend, especially if he had food.

It does not matter who it kills. The fact that it killed anyone at all means that it could pose a threat to other, innocent people.
