Survival of the fittest. Organisms that are better adapted to their environment thrive while poorly adapted organisms die off.

Example: antibiotic resistant bacteria can survive even though a sick person is taking medication while non resistant bacteria are killed.

Do a search for Darwin's theory for a better explanation.

It is the method of selecting the most successful organisms. Or the reproduction of the most successful organisms.

oooo we just learned this in bio...

organisms that survive and live long enough to reproduce are those with favorable variations of traits. because the offspring of these individuals will inherit the favorable variations, a larger and larger proportion of each new generation will have these variations.

Basically, it's "Only the strongest survive." If you have, let's say, an animal named a gir, it has two kinds of necks. One has a long neck, and the other has a short neck. Now, if, somehow, all the trees grew taller, then the short necked girs, with LESS DESIRABLE TRAITS, die off. The long necked girs, with MORE DESIRABLE TRAITS, REPRODUCE SUCCESSFULLY AND PASS ON THESE DESIRABLE TRAITS. Eventually, the girs evolve into giraffes.
Got it?
Members of a species with more desirable traits pass these traits on to the next generation.

It's a process of evolution...survival of the fittest.

In a nutshell, the organisms whose genetics are best suited to the environment they are in are more likely to reproduce.
