Now is the time to get baby used to road tripping. We started ours at about 3 months and planned breaks to include: breastfeeding, mom/dad and baby activity, easing tension of crying on the road. We also packed a variety of teething toys, baby crackers, foods and other favorite things to ease the trip and also make it fun. We talked a lot to our kids and they understand from our concern that 1. They will be cared for and 2. While some of the discomfort is going to happen we'll adjust for it at intervals only. We travel about 5K a year on short and longer jaunts and they are great with it.

For longer trips like the 10 hour we pack up and get started at night so their asleep during their natural sleep times. Mom of course sits by baby and dad (me) drives so that I'm the one tired and the one who is needed the next day is fresh (er).

Things we took personal to our infant/toddler: her chubba blanket, chubba pillow and breastmilk in bottles AND music. These helped her to know that while we were on the road she was still "home" with us.

Being human we are not always perfect on trips and we stop sometimes more than others, but plan at least one 15-30 minute break every two to three hours travel. If they go to sleep drive like hell to get where you need to!

Fair winds and following seas!

He will probably cry a bit but I would guess that he would sleep a majority of the way. At least if he is anything like my girls--a soon as we would start driving they would be asleep. Just make sure that you make plenty of stops so you can all get out and stretch and the baby can get some fresh air. It's probably going to be easier with an 11 week old than a 2 year old :0)

Have fun!

10 hours is a lot. There is no way he will sleep the whole time. Plan on stopping at least three times for feedings, leg stretching. And make sure to leave room in the back seat for someone to sit.

Also, before you leave, I strongly recommend that you take a torpedo level and make sure that the seat is at the correct 45 degree angle. This is very important for the baby's comfort and safety, and the seats have an annoying habit of slipping out of the right angle.

I think 10 hours is a bit much. But if you must go on this trip I suggest sitting in the back seat with him. DO NOT feed him in his car seat! Use the times that he is hungry as an excuse to stop and get out of the car. You need to do this anyway. If you feed him in his seat you will be unable to burp him and air will collect in his tummy and make him VERY unhappy. (I assume you are bottle feeding since a 10 hr car trip with a nursing baby would be more along the lines of a 20 hr trip with as often as you would have to stop and feed him) Use the stops to change his diaper as well.

We've brought our kids on trips like that ever since they were really little. Just make sure to stop at LEAST every 2 hours to get the baby out, change his diaper, and let him stretch a little outside of his seat. Put lots of powder (like Gold Bond) on when you change him, because he can get a nasty rash sitting in his seat for so long. Bring toys that he likes. He probably will cry sometimes, but he also might sleep a lot.

He will be fine. I agree with the other person better now than older and you have two and you have to deal with fighting the whole way there. Just stop and take him out of the seat a few times to stretch and feed and change him. All babies do at this age anyways is lay around it isn't going to be much different for him anyway. Enjoy your trip and don't worry.

That's a really long car trip for a little guy. My suggestion would be to attempt to make the trip at night so maybe the baby will sleep through most of it.

odds are he's going to sleep a lot of the time...if he does cry, it will be because he is hungry or wet. I took both of my children on road trips when they were young and it was no different than being at home w/them. Take plenty of supplies and pull over when need be to take care of him safely. Have a good trip and congratulations on becoming a new mother!

With any luck he'll sleep most of the way. He's only little, so it's not as though he's usually able to move about , so it won't upset him the way it would a toddler. Talk to him, sing to him, play music in the car, and give him a big cuddle every time you stop for a break and he should be fine.

He will cry and maybe get a little car sick to help with that you should ask a doctor to give you something for him and try to limit the amout of time he is in the car keep him warm and if possible have someone sit next to him so he sees someone when he is awake
