I believe we are ready for them, however the majority rules and it ain't gonna happen. There are way to many people that still have old attitudes re: race and women's equality.

I think our country should be ready for both. As long has they have good stands on certain issues they should get the vote; not just if there a woman or there race. We should be ready for any race and even a women although our country is still a white male dominated society. Its time for a change a more diverse; a more diverse change. Practically every country in the world has had a female leader and if we as Americans claim to have come a "long way" we should have someone other than a white male, become a president! :-D

Race wouldn't be an issue as far as the first woman president for this country. I guarantee you, folks will come out the woodwork to make sure that an African American does not become president. When Jessie Jackson ran years ago they had the highest voter turnout in years. The same will happen this time. The people who choose the president will indeed go with a woman before they would even consider letting an African American lead this country. And if Mr. Obama should happen to win his life will be threatened. Look at the presidents who had assassination attempts and they were Caucasian. Obama doesn't stand a chance!!! Remember when it was mentioned that Colin Powell might run? He started getting death threats and dropped out. He's more caucasian than African American and he couldn't even get started. I wish Mr. Obama would win. It's about time this country progressed past it's prejudices and discrimination. The media has already started attacking Obama saying when he was 6 years old he went to a radical muslim school! SIX mind you. That is how desperate the powers that be want to discredit this man to make him lose by causing trouble for him. That's the best that they could do and you'd best believe they'll keep looking for dirt to hurt his chances. I apologize for this being so long but that is a loaded question.

Why should we even have to ask this question in 2007? After suffering for 6 horrendous years with the current moron in charge, a slug would do a better job.
Both Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama are more than qualified to be president. Each brings with them an intelligence that has long been forgotten since the dicktator stole the presidency in 2000.
Women have been in charge of their countries since ancient history. Queen Cleopatra and Hatshepsut, the first female Pharoah.
In more recent times there were the Queens of Britain- Elizabeth I and Victoria , Catherine the Great of Russia, Mary Queen of Scots.
And most recently Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, Golda Meir of Israel, Indira Ghandi of India, Margaret Thatcher of Great Britain and Chancellor Merkel of Germany.
If these countries had no problem with women in charge than when is the US going to come to its senses and elect a woman or a black person?

seeing as two of the strongest democratic candidates fit this description, i hope the answer is yes. I must admit, the idea of a woman leading the country seems a little strange right now, though i am ashamed to admit it. A black president would be no big deal. Everyone loves obama, and there should be no differences between whites and blacks. On the other hand anyone can admit men and women are very different. We've seen black presidents on tv and grown to love them, so why not?

Even though I would like to see B. Obama win the presidency ( although i need to know more about where he stands on certain issues before he gets my vote), I don't think the US is ready to let an African-American brother be IN CHARGE, even if he is mixed. This is not my opinion personally, (I happen to think the brother's gotten his stuff together), but our country hasn't grown THAT much. That said, I believe the US would welcome a white woman before an African-American male for such a powerful position anyday.

It's the year 2007. What's the difference as long as the "person" does a good job. Female, male, African-American..time to get over those issues

Non of the above. We ain't reafy for nothing. The shock from the attack and the war going on now hasn't gotten out of our system yet. No reps nor libs will ever be able to fix that. These shock is going to stay in us for a long time till the next generation comes up with a new ideal that we can all believe in to forgive and forget. That's when America will be ready for anything new.

Next genereation, not this generation. Remember that, and write this down if you don't believe me.

No offence ,but I think the US is finally ready for an african american gay female transgender president!

That's pretty much what you guys need... a triumph of political correctness.

Keep going that way and Chineese and Muslims would eat you alive in 20 years.

We're ready for a good president, period; in my opinion, we haven't had one in a long time. Also, if people are going to elect a president on the basis of race or gender, then we aren't ready for either one.

How about we drop the white/black and male/female and just get someone who is good and qualified without lots of historical or family 'baggage' who will lead and serve and work for the country for a change? Just because they are black or white or male or female does NOT make then suitable. This is the leader of our country we are talking about here, not prom king/queen.
