I wanted diamond studs so we went to look at some that were a carat total in weight for $2,000. Well today is my birthday and I heard my parents discussing about when to give them to me. Hey you only live once and I would wear them all the time and for many years cause they won't go out of style. But, this whole morning my dad was going you should be greatful for what you have some kids don't even have money to afford to eat. He was also telling me the story of some women he works with who is around my age who has two jobs and is bearly making enough money for her and her boyfriend and has to get rid of one job. I mean in life you do learn there are people who are worse off then you but, when you see your 16 year old cousin who has just gotten a brand new volkswagon pasat for her birthday it's hard to concentrate on those worse off. But, after my parents telling me I should be happy I have a family who loves me (which I am) I feel guilty for wanting the earrings...

should I be? Should I tell them that was too much to spend or just be happy because they know I will be because those earrings were all I talked about. How do I stop feeling guilty?

Well, all I know is that your parents must have extra money to throw around and aren't terribly worried about spending that much! I have mixed feelings about your question. For one thing, it is possible to get a beautiful pair of diamond studs for a lot less. Giving you a gift like that in my mind sets you up to expect the same sort of treatment from any future fiance/husband.

It's not necessary to spend a big amount on something you really want. But apparently your parents are able and willing to give you the best. Telling you, 'tho, that you should be grateful and going on about how some kids don't have money to eat is rubbing it in. If he's expressing that, then it seems as if he's somewhat conflicted about what he's doing and no wonder you feel somewhat guilty.

Those earrings better be insured is my final thought!!

I do not understand why anyone would walk around with $2000.00 earrings on. May be it is because you didn't have to pay for them, If you had to actually earn the two thousand, and then spend it on someone else that may or may not be able to keep them. It is like having a $5000.00 engagement ring, All this stuff is for other people to look at and hopefully be jealous of. A costly gift in no way infers how people perceive you.The perception is all in YOUR mind, and the oh look my parents bought me earrings worth $2000.00. may impress about 3 people. the rest will be thinking I could have used that money in a lot more constructive way.And to finish this gift is for a birthday. not even some thing that you accomplished or worked for, You should be the one giving your parents a $2000.00 gift for giving birth to you and giving you a roof over your head and the good life that you have experienced, But instead you want stuff, and so they bought you your stuff. I can hardly wait for you to take responsibility for your own life and have to pay your own way, Hay you only live once
