In order to be really indepenent, one should have the basic right of living their lives in the way they want.In our society,we consider "the family" as a unit and hence, the rights of the individuals are pushed to the backseat,or worse still, supressed. Our sociey is a hghly biased society, which accounts for the gender bias and oppression of women. There are many families in our country where women are taught from a tender age to play second fiddle to men.One thing which really annoys me is when women are expected to give up everything, even their identities,at a point of time{eg:marrige}.Male children are still favoured over females.Children are abandonned and forced to beg.Its high time we realise that each individual is an unique piece of art and give each person their birthright-the right to live the way they want. The right for making their own decisions, irrespective of family, peer and spouse influences. This way,we can be really independent, for with freedom comes great responsibility.

Well, it seems you are talking about "we" as a nation-state and not about humanity. Independence, anyways, doesn't mean the absolute state of everything being prim and proper. It seems you have been confounded about an Ideal Society, which can never exist, and Independence.

Either way, we should be doing our small bits to make the world a better place. period . I am thinking what did I do today to say I have done my bit. Did I hear someone saying that she's thinking the same?

Independent doesn't mean doing whatever you want to.There is limit to everything.the situations are not good for women to work in night and hence they are not allowed to do anything .It is done in order to keep them safe not because anyone wants to steal their freedom.Independence must be associated with some restrictions.

Not totally....in everything we do and think we have to follow some ethics, morally and spiritually. Also we have to follow some norms in life. We cannot just do whatever we want that can harm others, physically and mentally.

yes.I'm very independent person.I will do whatever l like, but t should be within our moral and ethics of our society. We should use our independence only for good and helpful to the other people not for any body's destruction or any kind of hurt.As you said racism etc....these are not connected to independent.

I don't think you understand. "Independent" means you don't depend on anyone, which is really just a matter of personal choice.
