If you haven't got the gist of the matter by now
the WORD you hopefully was looking for here is---Defrag as in defragment
The regularity of defrag on a system is really dependent on just how MUCH the system is used--- if you are a heavy computer user---you probably need to do this operation at least once a week--- more moderate user -- every couple of weeks--- or-- if you are VERY seldom on a computer you probably wouldn't need to do this but once every six weeks or so--- But--- it Should Be Done !!!
Most defrag programs will do a certain amount of COMPACTING OF FILES at the same time of the operations that goes on within the scope of the program--- however--- if you are on Windows XP a better deal for the compacting of files lies in the Disk Cleanup Utility (usually found under Accessories / System Tools) This little giant will do a number on uncompacted files and can create some fairly significant space---- but---for the addition of any REAL space--- one should consider going ahead and purchasing a stand alone additional hard drive !!!!!

Should defrag your machine about 1once a week. To get more free space, make sure that you go into your internet properties and delete temporary internet files. If you have a high speed connection, can reduce the amount of space for the temp internet files as well on the options page. Click on the settings button and you can set the size to about 50 mb or so. Also uninstall any programs that you do not use. When insalling programs, you can sometimes select a full or minimal install. With a minimal install, you will reduce disk space used, but you will then need to keep the disk in the drive when you use the program.

- Defrag needed when you Add and or Remove TOO MANY files programs and anything at all mp3's movies etc.
Or when the system over a long time accumulates usless info bits and bites.
If defrag does not solve the problem the only clean solution it is
to Re-install the system.
- For extra space a good easy solution is to buy a memory
USB stick up to 2 GB and more.
It is a reliable removable and portable solution.
- For right now you can try a tiny tool from Finland, smal, clean and easy the totally freeware "Easy Cleaner" by ToniArts
that gives some options to clean the registry, clean duplicate files, clean unnecessary files(some files classified as unnecessary might be not so, read the instructions although I delete them all), start menu, space usage pie-chart in color to view any file or drive on how your space is used , some other options and Help .

defragment would do a little help. Although it is good to do that at least once a month (depending on ur usage), the reason is to get ur data in positions and would free at least a bit of space. It wont make a big difference. It helps in maintenance.
Other than clearing unnecessary files, delete old ones, empty recycle bin, better solutionw would be :
you need to get a hard disk. Its so much cheaper out there for 20GB seriously its much better as it maintains ur speed as well.

It's "defrag", short for defragment. Fragmented files are those that are not contiguous (i.e. stored so that the pieces of the file are right next to each other). Defragmenting attempts to put the pieces back together. Defragmented files are faster to read and write (less movement required of the mechanical read/write heads).
In the non-electronic world a defragmented file would be like walking to the living room to get a book whereas a fragmented file would be like walking from room to room to retrieve a chapter of the book from each room.
I won't speculate on what problem your PC has if you need to defag it.

Really clean your caches, temp and Temporary Internet folders.
To delete Temporary Internet files cleanly in windows 98 and also works in other windows:
right click your temporary Internet;
it's under c drive, windows.
It could also be under documents and settings and user.
Select find (search)
in the find input *.*
Delete the FOLDERS that don't make since.
don't delete contents.
If you have more then 5,000 files don't delete all the folders at one time.
When you delete the folders the files will be deleted
After you are done you will have two things left.
index and contents.
Also feel free to delete everything under temp.
There may be a few you can't delete, don't worry about it.
Don't forget to empty the recycle bin.
If you are using some kind of outlook, don't forget to empty the deleted files and you may also think about deleting your sent items.
This should be done before defrag.
I just did this on someone old laptop, there was 600 KB in files that was deleted.
If you download programs on line. You could transfer the installation files to CD or external hard drive or delete them if you don't think you will ever reinstall it again.
That would be the file you actually downloaded.
With a USB hardrive I put all my camera images, installation files, downloaded funny movies and songs.
I also put all may work files for webwork. I almost filled my 40gig external hard drive, time to get a bigger one.
Depending how often you add then delete files, once every three months will be adaquate ( don't defrag when there is power problems, or electric storm to be safe.)

It would depend on how much you down load but I check to see if it needs to be fragmented at least once a month.Your computer will tell you if you need to defrag at this time or not. First try a disk clean up then try a reboot You should reboot your computer once a day.click start then all programs then system tools then defrag. Or disk clean up;

LOL. Why defag it? They are probably just doing a re-decorating make over. LOL!
Another answer had it right. Photos & such take up a lot of memory. It's best to download them to a CD and free up all that space.

Well it depends, what kind of computer do you have? But I would usually de-frag my computer at least 2 times a week. Also run virus scan to check and make sure your computer is "healthy." It should run a bit faster if you keep up the good work!
