I'm joining the Peace Corps this summer to spend 2 years in Kenya as a health volunteer, and I'd like to have African and Africa-themed music at my going away party. I've already thought of a few ideas such as "Africa" by Toto, "Horse with no name" by America, Paul Simon's "Graceland" album, and some others, but I'm going to need more. Any help is appreciated.

10 points to the person with the largest number of appropriate song/album/artist suggestions!

African Themed Songs

Lion King soundtrack? Only half joking since you're headed to Kenya.

How about some of the more well-known African musicians like Yossou N'dour (Seven Seconds most famous but he has lots of great stuff), Johnny Clegg (& Juluka), Amadou and Mariam (Senegal Fast Food, Ja Pense a Toi), Papa Wembe (Sakana), Koffi Olomide, Fela, Cesaria Evora (Besame), Baaba Mal, Cheik Lo, etc. Sorry can't remember all their songs but check out a good music place like itunes that will have a bunch of these. They're all well known outside Africa so not that obscure.

I really like north African rai music (Cheb Mami, Khaled, etc.) -- most popular song is probably Desert Rose by Sting/Cheb Mami but also Aisha by Khaled.

Eddy Grant's Joanna (about Apartheid in S Africa) is old but still a great ska tune. I also like the songs like Free Nelson Mandela by Hugh Masekela (he's got a great album)

Kenya's great by the way.

Oliver Mtukudzi (Tuku to his fans) is amazing. He's an artist from Zimbabwe. He's got a lot of great albums. Thomas Mapfumbo is another artist from Zimbabwe. Also "Free Nelson Mandela" by The Specials just can't be beat. I've heard good things about Orchestra Virunga and Annie-Flore (she's a Gabonese singer). If you don't like any of those (how you wouldn't like Tuku I have no idea) check out this site: http://www.afromix.org/html/musique/pays/kenya/index.en.html
Have fun as a PCV :)

How in the hell do you figure that the music you've chosen so far is African in origin? They have about as much to do with traditional African music as.. I do... which is ZERO!

If you want TRUE African music, go to Napster and look for it there. You will be surprised at what REAL African music sounds like!! And oh by the way... I don't want your 10 points!!
