In a conductor, electric current can flow freely, in an insulator it cannot.Generally speaking, metals tend to be good conductors because they form metallic bonds where electrons tend to roam freely allowing electricity to conduct. Some metals are better conductors of electricity than others. Silver, copper, gold, and aluminum are materials with many free electrons and make good conductors. Silver is the best conductor, followed by copper, gold, and aluminum. Copper is used more often than silver because of cost.

Most non-metals make good insulators. Glass is an example of a type of material that keeps its electrons tightly controlled. Glass is made of silicon molecules, organized very tightly in to crystalline structures. Glass is an extremely good insulator. Many plastics are good insulators too.

An insulator is a material that DOES NOT conduct electricity, and does not allow electrictiy to move through it.

A conductor allows electricity to move through it. They are opposites.

Insulator: plastic, rubber, air(to some extent- see lightening)

Conductor:copper, gold, iron, PEOPLE (see lightening)

Much like water, electricity will take the least path of resistance.

Insulators are items and matter that cannot conduct electricity, or complete a path for a current.

Insulators include:
rubber
glass
would
plastic
leather
paper
water

Conductors are items and matter that can conduct electricity, and continue a path for a current.

Conductors include:
metal
salt water
nails
spoons
