Does anybody know what John Cabot was known worldwide for because I know he named Newfoundland and he started codfishing but what else? Is he special worldwide? Or just to Canada (Newfoundland)?

Hi - I'm from Greece living in the UK and he isn't very famous over here for anything at all.

In a quick survey round the pub, it seems that only 30% of people have heard of him, but half of those who had heard of him didn't know who he was or what he did.

All I know is that he was an Italian navigator and explorer commonly credited as the first early modern European to discover the North American mainland, in 1497.

There is a square in London's Docklands area named after him (Cabot Square).
