First off, what a terrific question!
I have loved books/reading all my life (now in my 50s). Like the other respondents to this question, I have absolutely no idea how many I've actually read!! I still have many books from my childhood (Oz books, Pooh books, Dr. Seuss books, etc.).
As to how many books are in my library, no idea on that either: but it's a lot!! I have books in every room of the house except the two bathrooms. A bookcase in the hall, one in the family room, two in my daughter's room, and two in my son's room.
I enjoy reading to learn and to escape! All types of authors, from the classic ones like Austen, Hawthorne, Steinbeck to modern romance writers such as Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Jane Green, to psychologists, and on.
Would hate to lose my sight, because I want to keep reading into my old age!! Would much rather lose myself in a book than glue my eyes to the t.v.
My daughter is following in my footsteps for which I am very happy (she's 15 1/2 yrs. old).

I own about 250 books. I have no idea how many books I've actually read in my lifetime. Most of the books that I read as a child, I've either given away or were from the library. I didn't really start collecting books until about 3years ago. Now, it's kind of a hobby of mine.

I'm going to have to agree with the prior answer. If you're a good reader, you have no idea how many books you've read. My personal library has got to be around half a thousand books crammed into a tiny apartment with my wife. I haven't read all those books, but I've read most of them, and that isn't even close to the amount of books I've read over my lifetime.
Of course, I'm a bit strange, so who knows? :) My wife and I are both English teachers, and I'm a bit of a speed reader.

I have read so many books it is hard to know how many I read. I have read a variety of books and various authors. I don't own a lot of books becasue I get them from the library. Then if i really love the book, i'll go out and buy it.

I have no idea how many books I've read in my lifetime. But I own about 300. I haven't read them all, but plan on doing it. The books on my bookshelf that are mine are always competing with the books I get from the library because it's a book from my past that I want to read or from a great review that I've just read. I love to read, but I feel that I'm not well-read because I only read about 75 books a year compared to the 300-400 a year I used to read back in high school. (3 kids and a husband will do that to you.) I love evrything from the non-fiction of Anne Lamott to Steinbeck to the great writer Jose Saramago to newcomer Nadeem Aslam. My only regret in life is that I will never live long enough to read every book I've wanted to read.

I read about 90-100 books a year and have for at least the last 15 years, so i have read 1300-1500 books. I currently own about 250-275 books, but I do not purchase books on a regular basis because I read them too fast to make it worth it unless it is a reference book or a book on a hobby of mine.

I have to agree, if you are a reader you probably have lost track of how many books you have read over your lifetime, I certainly have. I also have never bothered to count how many books I have but I have books everywhere - in bookcases, cupboards and packed away in boxes(I don't have space to keep all of them out). I have not read all of them as many of them were inherited from my grandfather who was also a great reader and had a vast library, still there are many other books I have read that I do not own so its impossible to count both.

I am the definition of bibliophile. I love to read and collect books. I know I have about 3000 items in my library, but I read too much to be able to know how many books I have read.

I don't think it would be possible to count how many books I have read. I love everything from Hemingway to Stephen King. I have even read Jude Deveraux and Mary Janice Davidson. I love Salinger, Steinbeck, Austen and Tom Robbins. My parents instilled a love of literature in me at a very young age, and it was one of the greatest gifts that they could give me.
