Get together with people who already know how to play, and sit in on their sessions. It's fun and really educational. The more you watch and listen, the more you'll play. By playing with other people your not so shy about messing up because others are there to cover you up. Eventually, you will be playing with gusto.

"Teach Yourself to Play Guitar" Alfred Method. (its a book) it teaches tab, chords, and music. (Its by Morty Manus & Ron Manus and its got a picture of a blue and white guitar, and an acoustic guitar on the cover.[you can get it at music supply stores] ) Also get chords and tabs for real songs. Google the song and artist in quotes and outside the quotes put "guitar chords" or "tabs". also try http://ultimate-guitar.com
but you should also get a teacher, i was LOST before i got a teacher!

My advice...take lessons. It's good to learn how to read music, later on you can read "tab" to take a shortcut. You will learn a lot quicker if you go to lessons, practice and make goals for yourself. Check out your local newspaper or message boards and ask around to find someone you work well with. It is ok to try more than one person, ask for a sample package.
I started playing guitar at 9 years old (that's a long time ago) - I never would have learned as much as I have without lessons.
Good luck!

A guitar teacher, but if you want to learn on your own there are lots of books but try and avoid tablature, it is much better to learn to read music. when learning a song do it one measure at a time play it over and over till you have it smooth and then go to the next one. practice atleast 1 hour a day. get a metronome so you learn to play in time.

Guitar teachers are always the best, the book cannot show you what you are doing wrong or right. But, buy a book first and gradually learn chords and how to play correctly. But I emphasize on GUITAR TEACHER!!! (make sure he/she knows what they're doing)

learning how to tune is a good start. it's also helpful to know how to read music but it's not necessary. it just makes is easier to play in different positions and to play by ear. i recommend buying a beginner's guitar book, like guitar for dummies (it's the one i used), to help you get the basics so that you can start writing songs. hammer ons, pull offs, and slides are also good things to know how to do if you want to write songs. good luck and have fun! :)

I've been messin round with the guitar for about twenty five yrs.
I believe that when you're first getting started it's best to find
a teacher. My reason is that learning about something that's
new to you, is bound to leave you with allot of questions.
Having a teacher gives you the option of interacting with
each other which is very helpful, compared to a book, tape, or
DVD. I t is important to find a good teacher. If you are not
satisfied with whomever it is teaching you, by all means move
on! You can find a teacher in a local music store, also try
looking in the papers. you might be able to find one that will
come to your house. If you can afford it one hour/wk. would
be good. Go For It! & Good Luck.
