I think the media and some people are making a mountain out of an ant hill regarding this issue. I am from the north-eastern part of india, having mogoloid feature.I have faced racist remarks all the time in every metropolitan cities of india. Even though,we the north-easterner are Indian as any indian can be but because of our mogoliod features my fellow countrymen from outside ne states think otherwise. Most of the people i met in delhi think i am from nepal to add to insult, most of them doesn't even know where my state is .Shouldn't the govt do something about the ne people of india, like teaching the mailand indian about the ne states of india instead of just helping out one shilpa shetty. what an irony? I mean being an indian and not being recognised as one. I think we (Indian) should clean our backyard before pointing finger to Jade goody or the Britishers.

Naish M , What makes a person a total indian? Is it the colour of the skin ,is it the religion or is it something else? What makes you more Indian than me? Change the way you think 'Naish' for the betterment of the whole country. And learn about the north-east and the southern states of India. I bet you are very weak in geography that's why you are saying like that.God bless you...

I totally agree with you. The most ignorant and racist people I have met (And I have travelled quite a bit) are from northern India, especially the loud crass punjabis.

They make life miserable for north eastern people and south indians amongst them. They are boorish ignorant and aggressive. They completely lack in self examination, wwhich explains why they are quick to poi nt fingers at other racists.

Yes, Indians are hypocrites, but so is everyone for that matter. People in India ALWAYS make racial remarks regarding the Whites. And we feel that it is OK to do this because the British deserve this after what they've done to India in the past... Yes, I agree that our ancestors have suffered a plenty, but it should not give us the go ahead to be discriminative. Indians ALWAYS have things to say about other races, and even other "castes". The so called Hindus even speak down upon other religions. The Sanatan Dharma speaks of equality, yet the followers chose to interpret the messages of the scriptures their own way.

Having said that, the issue of racism has been brought up by the media, and I don't disagree with this one bit. Having been brought up in the States, and being a minority, I have faced a lot of racism. If we are to live in a nation with different ethnicities, tolerance, and respect for one another is very crucial. We have to learn to live with one another in harmony. Thanks.

Indian do lot of things which does not make any sense. This kind of discrimination is a big issue and should be dealt as immediately as possible.
I am from southern state (AP). When I was in school I used to hear that north used to discriminate south on many issues. Moreover, the media is also culprit here, Indian media has never done any good for average Indian. People have to take charge and question this attitue, because, people from any part of India, are Indians and can command equal respect. Its shame for a country like India, which poses to bring equality by giving reservations to backward tribes, backward castes, women, but still carry regional discrimination. I know this is not the intension of people ( people should be educated to by govt. to give respect to people from every place ). If not govt, we have to educate people of our equality. After all, this is our country, I dont want to be separated or loose my right to be citizen of India. I would like to claim it, with all due respect. And its your right too.

Freind media over reacted. Public didn't. Me and my group (It can fit in a hall I say) didn't care about Jade's view or what media had to say about it. We don't care about what cultural picture is presented to us. All we care about is that when we are all together we enjoy.

But since media over reacted, some people started reacting along with them. And I must tell you that most of people who actually showed reactions didn't even bother about jade's point of view. What bothered them was that the whole of west is racist and we are being tormented. Well who created this picture of the west among them? Media... Later when these people showed their reactions, who hyped it? The media again....

I remember, few years ago when state of Gujarat was going through riots, I was watching a news report about the riots where this reporter showed the coverage and at the end added, "Mujhe lagta hai ki ye sab 'xyz' religion walon ne 'abc' religion walon ke 'pqrs' demand ke virodh mein kiya hai." (I think that people of 'xyz' religion did this to show their resent against the demand of the 'abc' religion). Who the hell gave the reporter rights to make his judgement and present it in public? His duty was to just show the coverage. Being a reporter he should be responsible enough to understand how vulnerable it could be to put forward such a statement in public.

Later when I actually went to the state I learnt that the people suffering from the riots were people from all the communities and not just 'abc' and 'xyz' religion.

All the racism in India to is actually a hyped figure presented by media. We Indians actually celebrate Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Baisakhi, etc. altogether. Haven't you and your friend circle enjoyed cultural activities of other castes, religions, races? I know you have... Do you make friends after knowing about their religion, caste, creed, etc.? I know you don't. That's the way Indians are.

How can we forget that during any calamity like tsunami, earthquakes, floods, bomb blast we Indians have gathered up to help the people out there? Salutes to all the Indians out there...

Proud to be an Indian...

:-)

We are a great nation in many ways, but the gentleman is right. We really should clean our own (Augean) stables first. Since we Indians discriminate against each other based on pretty much any available criteria, we really should not be demonizing the losers on big brother who must be wondering what hit them. What good came out of all this? Did it help break racial barriers? Did it make better people out of those involved? I dont think so. It gave Shilpa a much needed bit of 'phokat' publicity. The whole affair was a waste of time and newsprint.

I think we are not hypocrites but there are some issues which should be consider as there are some people in our own country who do such things which brings doubts in the west. We should also give proper recognition to the people living in north east region as they are our brother and sisters. As far as Big Brother incident is concern people like goody don't try to know our culture and only believes what they listen from others.

Indians are not hypocrites they are tigers. But at the same time I agree that morally we have not got over caste-ism which is another form of racism.
If you really probe into the 'BIG BROTHER' issue its Indians based in UK who voted for Shilpa irrespective of caste or creed. They acted like Tigers and Shilpa may be the face but the Indians at large won the racism issue supported by media. We need to learn lesson from our brethren abroad and get over the stupid mentality in our own country.

I think that it is a good thing that this issue is not in the public domain. It has made people realise that racism is rampant in all society. At least people will not think more about the issue. I hope the indian who make racist remarks about your features will think twice now. It is good that the media has made a mountain out of this mole hill. Next time you meet someone who is different to you make sure you remember what racism is all about.
