I would much prefer to read, but most people find it easier and more entertaining to watch movies than read books. I read constantly, and most of my friends think it's stupid. TV, internet, there are a number of things which contribute to the lack of reading in society today.

It's probably the reason why a high proportion of them can't spell words like FIFTH.

Reading does much more than entertain or inform (both of which books can do at least as effectively as TV); books also:-
* teach spelling and grammar
* demonstrate sentence structures
* improve word power and vocabulary by introducing new words to the reader
* stimulate the imagination rather than handing images and concepts to the viewer on a plate.
* encourage independence of thought by again providing the reader with a "starting point" from which the reader must use his own imagination to decide how something or someone looks, for example.

The lack of all these things caused by TV is leading us inexorably to a generation of unimaginative, illiterate brain-dead sheep.

I would say computers have taken over television. Though I do download books from the internet to read.

I'm a geek, I read lots of books and stay away from comercial television. magazines, and mindless internet sites. Nor do I play mindless computer games. I do however play go, chess, and reversi over the internet.
