Walter Payton never avoided contact, he would lower his shoulder and pop you before you could hit him. He played on plenty of lousy Bears teams until Mike Ditka got there.

The best (in no order) are Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, Emmitt Smith, and LaDainian Tomlinson

Jim Brown. He never missed a game and to the best of my knowledge is the only back over 100 games or more to AVERAGE 100+ rushing yards a game.As always you have to take into account the difference between the eras. However if you assume that he was playing in the last 20 years and had the benefit of all the nutrition and strength training of today he would make a mockery of the game with the diluted rosters.Jim Brown could make players miss him ,run over them or simply outrun them. One thing he never did was run out of bounds to avoid a hit...he always finished the run. He ran angry as if he had something to prove every game and he did.

Emmitt Smith & Walter Payton!!! Emmitt Smith played with a bad shoulder in the Giants game and help them to a win. These 2 running backs have the most rushing yards ever and there is no one that can even come close to them!!!!

Without a doubt Jim Brown. Jim Brown rushed for over 1,500 yards in 12 game seasons and over 1,800 yards in 14 game seasons. He was an all-pro every year he played including his rookie year.

Go to any football websites and look up who experts voted as the best player ever and see who's face you see on a regular basis.

He did NFL defenses a favor by retiring early.

That's hard to say, but I will pick Barry Sanders. Sanders played for a team with virtually no offense and no line to block for him - yet he made it all happen. In his 10 seasons, he never rushed for less than 1000 yards, and was All-NFL every year. He amassed an impressive 18,308 combined net yards in 153 games (Avg 119.66 yds/game).

Walter Payton was awesome to watch, with his power and the stutter and high steps. In 190 games, he gained 21,803 combined net yards (Avg 114.75 yds/game). He could run, catch and even threw 8 TD passes in his career.

Jim Brown defined all that is a running back; he ran with power and grace and was afraid of nothing on the field. In 118 games, he gained 15,459 combined yards (Avg 131.00 yds/game), and was all NFL for 8 of his nine years.

Gale Sayers scored 6 touchdowns in one game, and in only 68 games, amassed 9,435 yards combined total yards (Avg: 138.75 yds/game). He only played 7 seasons, three of which were shortened due to injury.

O.J. Simpson is pretty much regarded as only a murderer now, but as a running back, he was among the best. He won 4 rushing titles, amassed 14,368 combined net yards in 11 seasons (135 games) (Avg 106.42 yds/game) and was the first man to gain over 2000 yards in a season in 1973. Like Barry, he had virtually no team to block for him, so it was up to him.
