If it is Hotel Du Lac then it is Anita Brookner, a story about a woman who goes to a remote Swiss hotel after escaping from nearly being married.
Is this the right book? I assumed what you wrote was a typing error.

You must mean Hotel du Lac. The author won the Booker prize and was Anita Brookner. it is a good read

It is definitely Anita Brookner I had to write a long piece of coursework on it when i did English at school and I remember it well. It is the one about a timid writer who has an affair with a man.
